Paul Hierophant — Watching The Decoys

September 2023

Artwork for an unfinished trilogy of thematically linked vinyl EPs released on Hierophant Records.

Conceived as a three part EP series, we are still waiting on the final part, and inspired by Killing Joke (the title comes their lyrics), steelworks, space, The Hierophant, the occult and the Maria robot from the iconic science-fiction silent film Metropolis.

The colours came from experimenting with imagery of industrial forges and molten metal that Paul Hierophant talked about as influences on the music. They are the only element left from the initial front cover ideas which featured a steel foundry pouring molten metal framed within a head shaped silhouette with sparks and steam breaking out.

The robot head direction took over after discussions with Paul and the halftone effect came from trying different techniques as I listened to the music.

The back covers mix symbolism from The Hierophant with the idea of always being observed. The eyes are connected by a network of circuit board-like lines. The embers from the heat of the steelworks also tie it to the cover imagery.
